a Thought

Why do people do the things they do? Is it curiosity? Or is it to fulfill specific needs? Regardless if an action is right or wrong, there will always a negative and a positive result. Some may believe that there can never be a negative and positive outcome; instead, it must be one or the other. That, I must say, is untrue. People commit certain actions to fulfill an instant gratification, but the outcome will have a negative effect in the long run. An example is using steroids to enhance one’s ability in a sport. The athlete immediately gains superior ability in relation to his peers, but more often than not that athlete is caught in the years to follow, and his reputation is tarnished. Another route people use is delayed gratification, where an immediate negative outcome can suffice, as long the ending result is positive. This can be where a college student enhances their education by pursuing a master’s degree but end up owing a lot of money in loans. Immediately this looks terrifying, but it pays off in the long run to have multiple degrees to show on a resume. Which is the right method of action to use? Gamblers like to take risks, and those efforts involve gaining an immediate positive outcome, and worry about the after-effects in the future. In saying this, I have a story to tell. It is about a young man who prefers to take risks – who prefers instant gratification.

A narrow NYU-style hallway stretches into the distance, its institutional off-white walls lined with vending machines filled with identical “NoFear” cans, their metallic surfaces catching intermittent fluorescent flickers. One machine in the foreground is half-open, exposing wiring and circuitry, a single can jammed in the dispenser chute with droplets of condensation glistening under the sickly overhead light. The corridor’s far end dissolves into deep shadow, lending a cinematic, almost horror-like mood. Shot with a deep depth of field from a low-angle perspective, the composition emphasizes repetition and unease, creating a dark, psychological atmosphere in a realistic, cinematic style.
